The Internet is Really Really Great

Written by lainie at 10:54 AM on November 5, 2007 in Takebackthetech.net.

Are you troubled by pornographic materials on the internet? Do you consider it damaging? Or is it a valid expression of fantasy or of diverse forms of sexualities? Have you been harmed by sexually explicit and/or violent content through information and communications technologies? How have you dealt with this in your own use of the internet, mobilephone etc.?

APC WNSP invites you to Take Back The Tech, and let your experiences and thoughts count.

Do you think the government should legislate on this issue?
Or should it be left to the individual to choose what to access, communicate and share?
What about the role of the private sector? Or communities of content creators, technology developers and users?
How can the right to safety stand with the right to communicate when it comes to harmful content?

................

On 12-15 November 2007, the second Internet Governance Forum (IGF) will be held in Brazil, where civil society, the private sector and governments will meet to discuss about policy directions and priorities on the deployment of the internet globally. Among the issues discussed is should and how content on the internet be regulated.

We have seen governments and other groups use the language of protecting society -- especially women and children -- from harm to justify various forms internet censorship. What do you think?

I was asked to put that above by someone with Take Back The Tech. And I'm eyeing the "harmfulcontent" technorati tag that was suggested to me.

Sigh. Everytime TBTT comes along I feel so incredibly blur. I think most of my friends are trained by now to expect that I dislike thinking about things, because I never arrive at an answer. But.

Okaylah, hentam away!

=======

Censorship

If I see something I dislike in my browser, I'll close the window. I can do it myself, I don't need (or want) the government involved. I make my own decisions on what I want to see.

Oh, cmon. You guys knew I'd say something like this, right?

Especially the Malaysian Government. You must be KIDDING me, they're already such idiots with censorship, so many things want to potong potong potong. Somemore want to encourage them? Fuck knows what they'd censor under the label of porn.

Cheh. Better you learn how to think for yourself.

Porn:

I..............don't want to have the whole "what is porn, let's go over all the gray areas we can think of" talk. Suffice to say I feel labels seldom work in the hands of bureaucracy.

That being said - I am occasionally troubled by some aspects, not form, of pornographic materials on the internet or otherwise.

I wonder why it seems like some forms of porn are more popular than others. And why some are labelled as "fetish". Why so many of them look the same. Why it's such a big deal. Whether I've contributed to the perpetuation of some norms on how women / minorities are inequally treated, in the industry or otherwise (answer: most likely "yes", except when I'm in denial), because my visit allows porn sites to earn money.

And why do I get this feeling like Jemufo is sniggering behind me as I type this?

I wonder about consent, which makes me wonder how informed / empowered someone has to be about some things, before consent really meaningfully counts as such to me. My opinion fluctuates.

I think, today, porn just generates idle curiosity more than anything else in me.

Porn Censored by Government

Eheh.

EHEHEHHEHEHEHHEHHE.

Actually, this idea amuses me.

The question set me off daydreamin, trying to imagine going over a list with a politician on what forms of boinking would make for acceptable sex scenes to watch (Only guy and girl? Missionary? How about doggy? What if toys are involved? What if they cosplay? Must they be married? Are you kidding?), which first of all requires me to imagine

1) politicians with libido and

2) discussing sex, with me and

3) how from their statements, I would be able to guess their shagging techniques

which is

1) something I am in no way mentally prepared for, so

2) I shall stop here.

I don't like something, I stop doing it. Simple enough. I don't need anyone else to step in for me (though you may feel free to try changing my mind).

You want to imagine Khairy shagging or something, you go right ahead and do your thing. I won't be impressed, but heck, it's your call.

With That, These 5 Bloggers May Hereby Consider Thy Selves Taggethed, To Bloggeth About Internet p0rnz.

Suanie of Suanie.net

Niki (whose blog you probably cannot access).

Shaolin Tiger (because I am so curious about what you think and I am too lazy to bell you on Gtalk to ask.

HK 1997 (because I *did* think of you when I saw that the Lion Dance competition is to be held in Gentings).

Jemufo (cause this is more your thing)
=====

Anyway, I don't particularly like writing this because it makes me feel preachy, and I'm too tired to try and change your mind if you disagree with me.

How about, if that's the case, you just do what I do - and argue with yourself, on my behalf?

Eh. Lari from topic, again. Oh well. Lalala.

Hello, you.

Written by lainie at 02:19 PM on November 14, 2007 in work?, Daily Life.

Update from, of all places, a Starbucks. Pfah. Here for work. Still no home / regular net access, though apparently, that's about to change.

I'm no longer used to blogging. It was initially a matter of returning to my hotel room at the end of every night, collapsing on my bed, too tired to record all the super stuff that keeps the job interesting. I've fallen out of routine - I forget I even own a laptop, sometimes.

I don't even have regular net access.

One thing about working backstage in a musical - I got used to the jamming sessions that frequently happen when a lot of musically inclined people are in a room. I have this expectation for people to burst out into song and dance around me.

I've heard some pretty awesome versions of Zombie, Belaian Jiwa, rasta versions of songs like I Will Survive...The Gentings employees used to hang around in the showroom listening to the singing, you could tell we had a lot of talented vocals in the show.

At regular intervals I hallucinate Genting background noises - the way I hear the shore days after I leave the beach, I still hear distant squeals of thrill seekers on amusement park rides, our props being rebuilt every day.

I never expected (especially after all the scare stories) to get so comfortable backstage that I'll regularly fall asleep alone, in the cold darkness, on a makeshift bed of three purple chairs. I'd been told some pretty scary personal experiences for people working backstage in Gentings, and I didn't turn religious, but I caught myself getting occasionally superstitious.

Tony Eusoff speaks fluent Mandarin, which was a surprise to me. He's a cool guy, I can see why my friends enjoy working with him. We've found the ultimate way to make him nod off almost instantly (which left Tony susceptible to many pranks that happen when you fall asleep around a lot of cheeky, bored colleagues).

Watching the evolution of Zal's character, originally something like a soubrette character that evolved into a fiercer, "behind the scenes" singing assistant. I suggested she used the long fake braid to whip the others in the cast (notice I am not part of the cast, and therefore excluded) - I was slow to the uptake, apparently the ensemble boys had already been butt-fwipped by her.

The ensemble made me realise, sometimes, boys doing coordinated dance steps and singing manly songs together can look so cute. Then I get reminded of boybands and I start dreaming of ways to market the ensemble without going the boyband way.

The backstage antics were way funnier than anything that happened onstage. We had the gay man version of Rose Rose, the pervacious one, the foul language one...Actors ganking each others lines in daily conversation and laughing over them.
Guys dancing out the "Rose Chan" stripping scene, Zal introducing Avenue Q musicals to others (The internet is really really great.....for porn), the competitions the actors from Chinese theatre had with each other, which I found fascinating.

They would play games onstage, laughing out loud in character, or having this poetry competition, where they would take turns to make rhymes that - as far as I understood - were really hilarious. Most of the time though, they sounded like they were cursing to me (sometimes, they probably were).

I heard the "Italian" version of an operatic song sung entirely in Chinese cusses by Gan, the actor who plays "Lou Pan Leong". I told Tei she's a well awesome actor, and turns out Tei worked with her and agrees with me.

I'll be watching out for the Chinese language theatre group, I've seen some of them in Breaking Jipoh Ka Si Pecah before, and remembered being impressed by what I saw of them there, working with them cemented it - now I actually know what names to look out for.

Tin, who plays the main character, was saying something I thought was in Mandarin or Hokkien, which I didn't understand.

Lainie: How do you say that in Cantonese?
Tin: That was in Cantonese.
Lainie: Well, shit.

I know my Canto isn't great, but to watch them exchange those Cantonese rhymes everyday that I could barely understand really pushed it in my face that my grasp of it is rudimentary.

I see the people who hang around after shows to get autographs, and I wonder if I'll ever be that person. I usually take pictures, and I can imagine inviting people I admire out for a drink (and I have), but a....signature? Hrm. I wonder.

A lot of the cast were passing out programme books to be autographed by each other - I actually joined in, because a friend wanted to auction off an autographed copy for charity. It was utterly weird for me. Signing them was awfully weird too, some of them expected personalised messages from me, which makes me feel awkward.

Like...either I will keep in touch with you, or the only thing that stands between my pen and "Hi. Okay. Have a nice life is my guilty conscience.

Well. Rose Rose is over now.

=====

I've gotten a few goodbye smses from people leaving Gentings yesterday. I don't think they'll have enough opportunity to realise the irony of my job, which consisted of A LOT of phonecalls and smses -

It is simply this: I dislike talking on the phone, or replying smses.

=====

I mentioned something about gayity, and Tony (not Eusoff, but our guitarist, Leo), asked if I was gay.

Lainie: Oh. I don't look that gay to you? Haha..

Then I turned to our keyboardist, Elaine, and backup singer, Sarah.

Lainie: Did you know he didn't know I was gay?

The reactions I got were.......WELL. Turns out not a lot of people in the production knew....I wanted to ask them how they could if they weren't familiar with the stereotypes, but stopped myself, since people tend to take me seriously sometimes. I should probably keep my bad jokes to the people who know better, huh?

Oh, well. One of them actually crossed herself when she found out, which amused me. Turns out she knows a lot of my ex housemates, what with their familial churchly connnections.

I forget non-heterosexuality is supposed to be a minority sometimes, must be the circles I seem to mix in, where presumptions tend to be geared towards bisexuality.

=====

Am bumming, as some of you know, at Tei's place. One of her colleagues visited recently.

Tei: I hope she doesn't think there's anything going on between us.
Lainie: Nah, I don't think we give off that kinda vibe.

[ That being said... ]

Lainie: I mean, people say "I'm waiting for you to crush on Tei", and not "I think you have a crush on Tei", so I guess we don't look it.
Tei: I think that's the reason I let you stay over so much.
Lainie: You never know, I may be nursing an ultra secret crush on you.......
Tei: You want a place to sleep tonight?
Lainie: Although really, what crush?

Muah, haha.

Songwriter's Round

Written by lainie at 10:51 AM on November 17, 2007 in Daily Life, Arty stuff.

The night before I made my way to No Black Tie for an event, not knowing what it would be. Turns out it was Pete Teo's Songwriter's Round.

Performers:
Mia Palencia
Pete Teo
Azmyl Yunor
Melina

Yknow, I really missed this. The month I was away felt like I was being grounded, and it was great to be back.

I said hi to Reza at the entrance, though I kept staring at this girl with her head all wrapped up in a shawl, wondering why she looked so familiar. The next time I walked out, she had taken it off and it was Melina.

Lainie: Aiyoh it's you is it.....

She looked amused. I have the worst face recognition skills. Pete Teo later introduced this as her second solo public performance, which is...Er. Innaccurate.

Three East Malaysians there that night (Mia, Pete and Melina)...

Pete: Sabah boleh!
Mia: Sabah boleh!
Pete: Sarawak pun boleh.
Melina: Boleh..
Pete: Sikit la..

Which was funny because in terms of technical skills I think Melina was as usual more impressive than the rest, and I think, the crowd favourite. Someone shouted out "I love you Melina!" when it was her turn to play..

Melina: I love you too....Reza.

Heh, Reza's attempt to kacau did not work.

Mia sang a song she wrote for Malaysia's 44th birthday, after announcing some people should get their facts straight . I had a good time with most of the songs, it helped that I already knew how most of them went.

We gave open mic a miss (though I usually stay all the way to look for new acts), because it was 2am by then and I'd not eaten anything yet.

Zedeck: Stay for open mic.
Lainie: I haven't eaten all day, I can't.
Zedeck: I haven't either.

Friend: Is this a competition now? Okay, fine, I had dinner! I'm sorry!

Friend and I went to visit Zedeck after the show, to watch earth documentaries, and "Fry and Laurie". At one point Zedeck proposed a philosophical discussion, and was ignored. Then we left, cause he needed to rest so he could write what will undoubtedly be a scathing review of Rose Rose.

It was early in the morning when I showed up at Jemufo's doorstep, drowsy as heck.

=====

If the entry gets cut off halfway up there - it's cause I don't really have time to type as I'm waiting for my new housemates to pick me up from Jemufo's place, then I'm gonna start transporting stuff to my new house.

I know, I know. When's the housewarming party at. I said I didn't know.

Zedeck: It'll be this weekend.
Lainie: What? How do you know this?
Zedeck: Your housemate told me. Sunday night.
Lainie: Is it entirely screwy that I'm asking when it is from someone else?

Yet to be confirmed, the day. I'll let ya know, really.

I'm off to watch Stardust later, only because I forgot THIS is happening @ Annexe.

Oh heck, next entry.

Crossing Over

Written by lainie at 10:54 AM on November 17, 2007 in Events.

Event announcement, pseudo proper entry below. You should go for this, it looks interesting.

You know how we love collaborations at The Annexe -- so many surprises, so many alternative perspectives, so muhibbah, kan? This weekend, we present Crossing Over, an art and video event by American activist-artist collective called Evolutionary Girl's Club, and organised by local arts collectives SicKL and Rumah Air Panas (who recently gave us the very cool train-station art project LAMU).

EGC is an international group of artists, scholars and activists who deal with issues around voice, access and privilege though the making and exhibiting of art. The name of the group begain as a play on the idea of the "old boys club" and its privileging of men. Hence, the Evolutionary Girls Club is "an INCLUSIVE group... We have many genders within our membership. Anyone who is interested in art and activism can join. You don't have to be a girl by identity or genetics. We only exclude exclusive behavior/actions."

The event represents the EGC's first appearance in South East Asia. "Crossing Over" includes "the idea (and the reality) of change, movement, travel, communication, connection, transition, flux, transcendence, diversity, tolerance, understanding and possibility. We take this as a step to cross the borders of country, language, culture, race, sex and gender. Metaphysically, we attempt to cross the border of our own preconception, limitation, judgment and prejudice."

Come and join Evolutionary Girl's Club and local artists in these two days of artistic activism and kinetic collaborations and be surprised.

Press release with history of the groups and artists is attached. For more pictures, you can go to http://www.evolutionarygirls.com or http://evogirlscrossingover.blogspot.com/ . For enquiries: 012.695.7987 (Kok), 016.684.3063 (Yap), 017.371.5641 (Razman).

WHEEEEEEEE!

Written by lainie at 02:00 AM on November 25, 2007.

HAPPY 4th Blog Anniversary, to (me) This Bloggggggg!!

(actually, I missed it again, but heck)

=====

One liner update: New house, new housemates, Crossing Over in Annexe, Lapsap at Palette Palatte, Popagandhi visits Malaysians, The Mage Cafe, design work, warehouse booksale, supper with friends, and of course I can't remember everythin cause it's been....days.

=====

I have internet access at home now! Finally!

This was written some days back, and I'm too lazy to check anything:

I've moved into my new place, kinda. No furniture as yet, just the cabinets that come along with it, a place to sleep, and some books. I swept and mopped the entire house yesterday, which took way longer than I anticipated.

The rooms are kinda small, but the common space is really generous here. We have a garden and a backyard. With time (and $$$), this place could look really homey, with a party potential.

Lainie: It's ridiculous, this bathroom is so small I can touch THREE of the walls at one go!

Ding told me to stop doing that. I can't help it. My bathroom back home is the size of my current bedroom, and my biggest culture shock from Ipoh to KL was finding out this wasn't the default dimensions.

I share a bathroom with Ding, and apparently, a lot of choices in toiletries. We have the same toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shaver, face wash. It's like going into some retarded version of a bathroom that belongs to twins.

Adrianna: Why don't you guys just take turns buying toiletries?
Lainie: How weird would it be if people visited us and saw one toothbrush in the bathroom?

Apparently, they'd only meant the soap and stuff, not the toothbrush. Oooops.

=====

Crossing Over - From Here to There, From There to Here
an art exhibition by The Evolutionary Girls Club artists' collective.

Attended the opening for that event in Annexe. An exhibition that came with the usual "multi-arts package" that events seem to have. Poetry readings, music performances, some screenings.

Pity it's over by now, there's actually some parts of the exhibition I wanted to go over again, because there was an idea lingering behind it that I liked.

It's okay, I can remember what I saw. It's just nicer to explore in physical space.

=====

Went for dinner with my Scrabble mates in a geek cafe I found. Food and board games! Risk, Taboo, and a whole lotta boxes I did not recognise but am looking forward to learning.

It's next to Atria, called The Mage Cafe. Fun place, nice atmosphere, decent food (and prices - I tried the baked fish). While playin Taboo: My first word to get them to guess was.

Lainie: Okay, if you pee, but you don't use a toilet, you create a..........
Anne: PUDDLE!
Annie: ................

Hehe. Mental connection with Anne. I don't want her to go away, I like her company...Met Johann and Dianne (from the Rose Rose production) there. Seems like the kinda place filled with regulars.

Go visit Mage Cafe with your friends if you're in the area, it's good fun.

=====

I've been going through my papers, trying to find the receipts from my time in Rose Rose, so I can sort out my claims. Going through the stacks of phone credit reload cards, it's crazy - don't reckon I've ever used it that much before. I'm surprised I could afford it, I guess that's where the money I usually spend on events went to, while I sat through rehearsals at night.

I'm wondering who goes through the claims because I wanna write disclaimers on some receipts for stuff like "Ear Pick" and say "THIS IS A PROP" before anyone thinks I'm claiming money for my toiletries.

=====

Met up with this woman in Midvalley to watch Stardust, but tickets were sold out. Someone only left the office to buy tickets as I was paying for popcorn.................................

Instead, we went for Lapsap flea market in Palette Palatte. Lapsap is like the Wednesday night event where you see the Friday TAG kids in...different clothes. Colours, big stripes, flowery prints, loud colours, big sunglasses. Met a lot of friends there.

Had one beer, turned red. Had some nachos, very happy.

Turns out Mei Ling is a girl I used to see around college...7 years ago, when she had big hair, and I was fresh outta Ipoh. She's even friends with Rach, Risha, a lot of people I've known from way back - it's surprising Loft is what introduced us to each other so much later (that and pet applications on Facebook).

Mei Ling and I joined forces and.....still no gaydar between the both of us. PAH!

=====

Adrianna popped over to KL on a surprise visit, and managed to rally a lil dinner gathering of females - Ding, me, Pei and Jemufo. Ding and I tried to find Adrianna's "Nayumi" restaurant in Bangsar, before we realised she was saying the Mandarin version of butter chicken, not some spread of Japanese girls.

Adri was telling me about her friend in Singapore, a really big duck.

Internal Monologue:

Lainie: Maybe she means...a big fuck. Or maybe her friend looks like a duck. Kinda like how my friend looks like a small horse, her friend looks like she has a beak.

Adrianna: She's a really big dyke.
Lainie: Oh!

We found our restaurant, had a decent dinner, then headed to The Apartment in The Curve for after-drinks. Lola joined us there. Ding ordered a Chardonnay and the waiter asked "Red, or white?". I said she should have insisted on a Red Chardonnay just so he could search all night.

After drinks, it was supper at William's, an old hang out of mine with Kate. Actually the whole Curve-William's-One U area reminds me of the woman, I miss her.

Adri and I discussed the possibility of a joint "Popagandhi and Lainie Coming Out Party". What you reckon, would you attend?

Lainie: It'd be like planning our own surprise birthday party.

Read Adri's update on her visit: Popagandhi: My Impressive Malay Vocabulary
Read Jemufo's update on that: Jemufo: I have yellow flowers

=====

Late night, early morning, doing design work. Went to meet the dude printing some of my designs later in the morning to pick up some samples.

After that, headed to KOMAS to hand over some files, and design a DVD menu for them. It surprised me that some of the Rose Rose cast had seen my designs elsewhere especially for the Freedom Film Fest (actually, any of them who'd seen the Flash banner for the Rose Rose production they were in would have seen my work, but that was so basic it didn't count). Cathy handed out her business card for Kakiseni, which I also designed, but heck. I took one from her just to keep.

Left KOMAS after lunch to deliver some more files elsewhere, and by the time I was done in the evening I'd just missed going for a film festival I'd wanted to go for with Effa.

Talked with Meesh about an interesting project she's coming up with, and already making a lil list of people to put her in contact with. I don't think I'm such a hands on person, I'm more of a portal to such parties.

She's suggesting I team up with Mr Kevin Yeoh to design the stuff for her event. Sounds like fun.

=====

I went to a warehouse booksale in Atria, and walked away with 3 books.

Will Self's Book of Dave, and Helen Dunmore's A Spell of Winter - both titles I've been meaning to get for too long. Currently reading James Kelman's "You Have to be Careful in the Land of the Free", a book I purchased after reading the first line:

I had been living abroad for twelve years and I was gaun hame, maybe forever, maybe a month.

I'm a sucker for those Scottish spellings, might have been something I picked up from reading X Men too much. If I were more inspired, this entire post would be in what I think Pictish would be.

Warehouse booksales - Hell is a heaven I cannot afford.

======

Just came home from supper with Tei and Smile, who have taken to discussing my sex life, and how taking exotic dance classes will help improve it. In public, and loudly.

Lainie: Guys, I'm really a very quiet person!

I mean, I know sometimes it doesn't look it (what with the blog), but really.

They found out that I order pretty food but I eat messily. And I am really referring to food.

Films

Written by lainie at 12:17 AM on November 26, 2007 in Arty stuff.

Talking about Soylent Green, an old dystopic movie, with Tate.

Tate: So he asks the woman, "Are you furniture?", and she says "yes", so he fucks her because he's allowed to fuck the furniture.
Lainie: I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want policemen literally fucking my furniture, even if it's made of...wood.

[ Moment of consideration ]

Lainie: So what about the men? Do they come with, like, the cars or somethin?
Tate: It's a very patriarchal film.
Lainie: Ahhhh......

"Officially, she's furniture, she comes with the apartment. She belongs to the tenant".
Watch the Soylent Green Trailer

I was downloading the movie, but after the trailer I'm pretty sure it's not worth my time.

I did, however, watch Luis Bunuel's movie The Phantom of Liberty. I liked it, the story goes from one character to the next. Incest, religion, "invisible children", man in playground stalking children, naked women playing the piano, a tactless doctor, S&M in front of strangers, celebrity sniper, people taking dumps together, dead people making phone calls.

Oh, wow. It sounds a lot more neurotic typed out. Worth a watch, definitely.

Trailer for Phantom of Liberty here (you'll need a Youtube account).

Now I'm awaiting a certain someone to hand me a Alice in Wonderland porn I covet. Tired, gonna tuck in soon. Just spent the day cleaning up the new house.

Singapore, I never thought you could make me laugh so hard:

Check out Singapore Media Development Authority's rap video.

It's like watching your parents do something horrendously embarrassing in their aim for "hip, cool, or even disarmingly charming despite it all".

Nessa was interviewed for some Dove thing lately. I don't understand her interview, but the video works, even if it's so weird to hear her speak in Malay .

Now I'm gonna call her to say I'm well pissed she's been in KL a few days and couldn't make time to visit me.

=====

Lainie: I'm pissed at you, yknow.
Nessa: Oh, you are?
Lainie: Yeah.
Nessa: Haha...I don't blame you.
Lainie: Heh. Yeah you'd better not.

We should be meeting today if she isn't too busy being a wanker to see me.
