I will not like it if your website host is Exabytes.

It made me a bit irritated to see some friends on the "Notable Clients" list for Exabytes hosting today, including Iwraw Asia Pacific, and Disarseter Records. The reason is this, please do read on and see why I think Exabytes is ass:

Dear Sir/Madam,

I was brought to the attention of an email sent out by Exabytes in regards to its policy change recently. Upon perusing the policy change, I was taken aback at a portion in Section 3.2 which describes adult contents:

3.2. What we categorized as Adult Contents, but not limited to:
 - Website relates to gay and lesbian

Does this mean a homosexual-centric blog will be prohibited under your company's policy? What about a website that promotes and reviews LGBT-friendly establishments, lifestyle or events, e.g. clubs, restaurants, cafes, anecdotes, meetups?

I hope my doubts are clarified, as your vaguely worded policy promotes very discriminatory and contracted views of your company.

Yours

Talk about bad PR. Talked with my friend after that, about her email exchange

girl: yeahhuh
  some more in my email
  i was like
  guys you're vague
and this could be very discriminatory just in case you didn't realise
and this was the response i got
  -_-

lainie: ................

I told another friend of mine (a graphic designer), who said she was already aware of the situation (guess who isn't her hosting company).

I've sent Exabytes an email enquiring further. If you have a website hosted under Exabytes, may I suggest you contact them regarding their fucking policy, followed by looking up an alternative server (eg: Integricity)?

[ Update: I contacted friends from Iwraw and Disarseter. Iwraw will follow up, and Rafil from Disarseter sent out the most pro-homophobic-multi-bigotry email to Exabytes praising them for their stand against homosexual content, and all sorts of undesirably right-wing politics, then cc-ed a whole bunch of people including Exabytes admin, activists, journalists, editors, and politicians. I've been giggling over the email, it's so bad. I will update more when Exabytes releases a statement. Currently, only Elizabeth Wong (si, the politician) has enquired further. ]

Hey Chan,

As Lainie asked just now. I too would like to know what Malaysian Law you are talking about here. When you say adult content, it's nudity etc, sexually explicit, and yet you add gay and lesbian content. Wtf is that? It makes no sense.

Gay and lesbian content need not necessarily be adult content you know. It's true that homosexuals like Lainie are sexy and stuff, but really, they are not that objectionable you know.

Also, Ooi, whoever this is (has bad English for one, it's so salah to have a Cust Service person who's England not powderful ok? Just a tip)

"We are regret to inform you that any content (eg: blog, LGBT-friendly establishments, lifestyle or events, clubs, restaurants, cafes, anecdotes, meetups) related to gay and lesbian (homosexual) will be prohibited to be hosted in our server."

THAT IS NOT SEXUAL/ADULT content. Since when do posts or info on restaurants, lifestyle events constitute as that?

Please cite this Malaysian Law you are operating under, because I have many, many, lawyer friends, and I'll ask them if this is such. So humour us la, and tell which laws these are. I'm waiting in anticipation to your justification of not being discriminatory, because you ARE.

Sincerely we have no intention to discriminate anyone in this world. I feel bad if our newly enforced policies have upset anyone. But I need all of you to understand that, as one of the largest web hosting companies in Malaysia, we have to be responsible by ensuring that all the contents hosted in our network are legal and truly compliant to Malaysian Law without violating any terms, rules and regulations set by our upstream network and data center providers. We truly support the freedom of speech in the internet as long as it does not go beyond the boundary of Malaysian Law.

Cheers!

CHEERS??

Please refer to email sent by Jac SM Kee to your admin:

"Why is every single material related to gays and lesbians considered adult content?

And Ooi, by prohibiting gay and lesbian content as adult content without reasonable and acceptable justifications, you do mean to discriminate gays and lesbians, and you have. "

i still hold your company accountable for its policy, and you have yet to address the question raised by Kee - why is everything related to LGBT considered adult content? Which piece of legislation are you referring to here? Cite.

Rafil of Disarseter has also reported that your company has stated in an email to him that Exabytes will allow explicitly homophobic material.

As you can see from the reaction caused - if there's any sincerity from your side, it's fucking discrimination with a smile, so piss off if that's all you have to say.

by the way - i'm still waiting for the reply to my email.

Interesting! first of all, their policy is probably politically linked, although i'm purely speculating :P but there are alternative to crappy malaysian hosting! anyways, i'd like to offer some alternative hosting options

a bit of self-promo here.
1. host with me? :D everything’s manual and 1-on-1. as it’s not my core biz, i've not placed any restrictions: whatever available to me is available to u :) only limit is ur hosting space and the bandwidth limit. write to me to enquire about rates and packages.
2. i’m on reseller. My host probably can offer better everything. even with the 13+hrs time diff, support’s always been prompt to reply, usually within 1hr and problem solved within 2 to 3hrs max! go with them, it's still your best choice after all! www.surpasshosting.com

cheers,

interesting... got here thru consumers rock facebook group

but there are alternative to crappy malaysian hosting...

a bit of self-promotion here... owner: feel free to blast this reply to non-existence if you find the self-advertising offending in anyway...

first of all... their policy is probably politically linked, although i'm purely speculating :P

anyways... i'd like to offer some alternative hosting options...

1. host with me? :D much as i'd love to trumpet my service, i don't have much to speak for it except one-on-one service when the need arises... you won't find automated registration/billing/renewal notices etc... everything is manually handled ... cos this was setup to service a few hosting accounts as an add-on service ... but i'm open to expansion if anybody wants to take up the challenge of coming up with an automated interface... anyways, write to me to enquire about rates and packages...

as this has become a side-income generating biz for me, i've not bothered to place any restrictions on the hosting accounts... so whatever is available to me is available to you :) unlimited number of mailboxes, unrestricted cPanel, unlimited no. of databases, Fantastico control panel, the whole works! only limit is your hosting space and the bandwidth limit imposed by default.

2. host with my actual host... i won't deny that i'm on a reseller package and have more bandwidth than i can use and is trying to make some pocket money on the side... but heck... my host probably can offer u better after sales service and better packages... so... i have no qualms whatsoever whether u host with me or with the actual host themselves... their website is http://www.surpasshosting.com

even with the 13+ time difference... their support has always been prompt to reply... usually within 1hr and problem solved within 2 to 3hrs max... go with them if you have the facilities to pay online by credit card. it's still your best choice after all!

cheers,
khai

Exabytes earned a permanent ban and severely blacklisted in my books. No way in hell will I have anything to do with them. Even if they retract their intention, the damage has already been done. I'll be spreading the word to my friends not to do business with them.

I'm afraid there may still be a lot of companies such as Exabytes in Malaysia, unfortunate as it may sound. It's up to anti-homophobes like us to expose these bigots for what they truly are.

Prejudice, discrimination and bigotry have no place in the 21st century! Poor service ought to be done away with too, in fact... and poor grammar... reading the Exabyte e-mail kinda hurts.

Email update from them! (Let me know if you want the original- looks like the same person who replied to Girls' email in your post)Also good to note they've reverted back to their older TC rather than their newer one in terms of content:

Hello ******,

Thank you for your reply.

I have roughly look through your blog at http://geminianeyes.com and does not seems to have any adult content in it. In other words, your blog should be safe hosting in our server.

Exabytes as a responsible Malaysia based web hosting company, we only can host and support web sites which are legal and not violating any Malaysia’s laws.

We have being practising No Adult Content Policy since the first day we run our hosting business. However, due to numbers of web sites hosted by us, we might have overlooked sometime. Therefore, we have just send out reminder to our client on this.

You may refer to our annocement here:
https://support.exabytes.com/index.php?_m=news&_a=viewnews&newsid=370

We do not mean to discriminate gay and lesbian at any attempt. We are only giving some example on what are considered as adult content for reference for our client to avoid confusion. But this has somehow create more confusion especially on the topic of gay and lesbian.

If you have any enquiries, please do not hesitate to contact. Thank You!

it actually came from some email they sent out

Dear ****

1. Email forwarding to Yahoo!, Gmail, Hotmail and other popular free
email provider

1.1. We will no longer permit email forwarding from your hosted email
account to any of the free email service providers (e.g.
tm.net.my,streamyx.com, yahoo.com, gmail.com, hotmail.com, aol.com,
rocketmail.com and so on) or any online groups (e.g. Google groups and
Yahoo groups) in our shared hosting mail server.

1.2. This is due to free email service provider has applied more
strict anti-spam policy in their mail server. Due to this issue, if
they detected many of our customers set their email account to forward
a copy of the email to the free email service providers. If the
account have a lot of email being send to the account, all the email
will be forwarded to his or her free email account and instead of
Yahoo detect it as an email, it detect the forwarding as attack on the
free email account. Due to that issue, the service provider will
block us from sending email to their email account.

1.3. Unfortunately, even though we are not responsible for this spam,
these service providers noted have repeatedly been blacklisting our
mail servers, causing legitimate email to be blocked.

1.4. In order provide a smooth email transaction between our mail
server and those email service providers, we decided to disallowed
customer from forward their email to the email service provider.

1.5. If you have any of your user email account forward any email to
any free email service provider. Kindly request them to remove the
email forwarding.

2. Custom .dll installation is no longer supported.

2.1. We will no longer provide any custom installation software and
dlls' on our Linux and Windows shared server.

2.2. The below are the reason of not permitting custom installation
software and dlls:

- Installation of the dlls and custom software will cause our web
server configuration change
- might affect our other customer website
- standardized all our server configuration
- If requires any of the custom installation software or dll, kindly
consider taking up a dedicated server.

3. Reminder: Adult Contents Are Strictly Prohibited.

3.1. Adult Contents are strictly prohibited on Exabytes' network.

3.2. What we categorized as Adult Contents, but not limited to:

It's malaysian hosts that are anal in general. Aside from the above, things that piss me off are:

1)Retarded cPanels
2)Locking of domain configurations (i.e restrictions on subdomains etc
3)Locked MX records (which means you can't use the awesome Google for Domains service, and it's also because of this you resort to forwarding your mail to google instead of outright allowing gmail to handle all your mail)
4)mySQL DB not included (WTF??!!)

I think they are working hard to make up for the churning customers who no longer can stand up to their lip service.

The sad thing is, there seems to be no other web hosting companies in Malaysia that can offer decent reliability...sigh...

As someone who's actually used their services, Exabytes does NOT offer decent reliability. Our site was constantly down and their customer service would require a couple of days to churn out a badly written reply. Unfortunately, they were cheap and one of the few ColdFusion hosts available...

After our site crashed for the millionth time, we dumped them and they dumped us. We also dumped the CF script and are now looking for a new host. (Any recommendations?)
